Ten Question Tuesdays with Adam Hayward

When Skim Invasion decided to add another writer/photographer to Travel Logs…there was really only one option and that was Adam Hayward. Adam Hayward has been turning heads with his photography and traveling for sometime. Adam is on the staff of Foreverskim and continues to travel. Adam is about to make his way to the Caribbean and latley he’s been to Chile, Brazil and the amazing state of Florida. He’s even working on a great project called theBox. And don’t ask him direct questions, ever.

SI: How long have you been in photography?
Adam: I’m not sure. Maybe 7 or 8 years?

SI: How did you discover skimboarding?
Adam: I first saw wave riding on a family vacation to Hawaii, then I came back and tried it on some shorebreak spots in San Diego that I used to bodyboard and I obsessed over it until I finally moved to Laguna a few years later and got involved.

SI: Where is the ideal location for you for a future trip?
Adam: Anywhere. I don’t care. I love moving. I wish I could fly.
I am particularly excited for Africa and the Philippines which I have planned for roughly next year around this time.

SI: You really go into loving different cultures and people when traveling…Is it that these cultures are just different than your own or is there something deeper?
Adam: Although I do love the differences in other cultures, it is certainly based on more than that. I really feel that the only way that I am able to do any of the things I do is by the grace of love. If I had to sum that up, I would say that the only way I can afford to travel, is by making my number 1 focus of that travel to give back to the people I meet. That however is a very simplified and incomplete way of looking at love, but that is one aspect that I am often referring to.

SI: Are you a person that would like to see skimboarding blow up or are you just fine with the current size of the support?
Adam: I would love to see it explode. I hope to live to see the day when my friends can get paid to do the things they love to do so girls like them and their parents cut them some slack.

SI: Out of all the places you have traveled…what place has had the best waves? And what place has had the best culture from people, food and beautiful pictures?
Adam: I hate to pick favorites, because nowhere is really “better” than anywhere else. Some people would like to say that the waves are better in California than they are in Holland, but skimmers from each seem to be equally satisfied with there situations so I don’t see the basis for that argument. That being said, Brazil is freshest in my mind and has absolutely amazing waves, people, food, nature, scenery etc etc. but then again, so did Chile. And France. And Portugal. And Cabo.

SI: You have been filming awhile for “The Box”. How is this project going and can we get a little more information?
Adam: theBOX has taken on many different forms over the course of the past couple years and many different directions, but currently I am settled on it being the story of a journey, with a focus on the different people, places and waves of the world within skimboarding. I plan on releasing the first part of it in the spring or early summer of 2010 and it will likely be an 1.5 hours of my travels from Laguna to Chile, Florida, Brazil, the Caribbean islands, and 2 more locations i have yet to settle on.

SI: On a lot of your videos on the internets you included some great music. What are Adam’s top five artist right now?
Adam: Music is a part of me that needs changing. It is such a big part of me that I tend to be both very sensitive towards it and very selfish with it. For example; I can’t force myself to tell anyone, not even my closest friends, who my top 5, maybe top 10 artists are. Mostly for the point that most of my favorite music is going to be used in my film and I don’t want people getting burned out on it before it is released, unfortunately, that innocent side of the argument is ousted by the selfish side of me that despises pop music and wants my favorites to remain exclusive to my ears until I am good and ready to let it go. Do you see what kind of sicko I am?

SI: Do you like the current state of media in skimboarding, as of right now?
Adam: I like where it is going, sure. I love that we have people like yourself, Aaron Peluso, Dave Levin, Matt Adams, Derek Makekau and many others, who could be applying their talents to more socially acceptable tasks, but instead belong to skimboarding’s inescapable grasp.

SI: Who is the most underrated skimboarder you have met on your travels?
Adam: Again with the direct questions. sigh. I guess maybe Renato Carlos or Leandro Azevedo from the Sununga area, if I was a pro from the States I would fly down there and break their legs so you’ll never have to compete against them.

SI: What does Adam Hayward have en store for the rest of 2009?
Adam: Lots, I hope. As long as I can stay focused on skimboarding you should see a lot of new, fun stuff in the coming months. Though I should warn you, I am inches away from moving to a farm in middle America with a friend to make beautiful music.

One Response to “Ten Question Tuesdays with Adam Hayward”
  1. It’s great to see the hole skimboarding scene discoverying Brazil. All the skimmers here are looking forward for the international contest in December. Sure Sununga has incredible talents, will be great to see if kids such as Renato, Leandro, Jacks and Rafael Prado among others from all over Brazil can match up in a heat against the best in the sport.

Make sure all of you who are pushing skimboard forward are more then welcome to our spots.

    Peace
