Event Regulations

Official Skim Invasion Event Regulations

1.     A scoring system of 1-10 will be used and half points will also be used to prevent ties. 1 being the lowest and 10 being the greatest thing you have ever seen on a skim board.

2.     A score of 1-3 will be used if a rider fails to complete a ride. Example would be if a rider completes a wrap and attempts a shove-it and misses, he would get said scoring. No more than a 3 will be given.

3.     A score of 3.5-6 will be given to a rider who completes a wrap and does not fall. No tricks involved, just a wrap. 3.5 being a shaky looking wrap and a 6 being a well executed wrap.

4.     6.5-9 will be for rides that are completed to include liners, wraps to any trick, liners to any trick, air re-entries to the wave, and other wave riding combinations. Remember they must be attempted successfully to count.

5.      A score of 9-10 will only be given in the event that a skimmer nails a sick, crucial, amazing, multi-combo trick, or just plain best ride you have ever seen. You will know it when you see it.

6.      The head judge will call out rider colors as well as other judges that see the action before the head judge. The head judge will make the call on all completed rides and will be marking the sheet with a C for completed rides and F for failed attempts. The head judge will also call out the rider who is being judged and all judges will score that rider. In doing this, we can assure that each judge has seen the rider and is judged fairly and evenly.

7.     Priority in the beginning of the heat goes to the 1st rider to attempt a ride. After that it rotates to one of the riders who haven’t gone yet. It will be the head judges discretion who gets priority.

8.     Their color rash guard and not their names will call out riders during competition. This is to dissuade any bias toward riders from the judges.

9.     The contest director and/or the head judge will make the determination of how to score the contest based on wave conditions. Flat to ankle high waves will be scored more liberally than thigh high and above waves. At this point waves will be scored as said above.

10. Tricks that are attempted and/or made “in the flats” when waves are present will not be given more than a score of 4. This also goes for “out the back” airs.

11. All rides will count on the scorecard. We do not throw out the highest and lowest scores.

12. The top three scores are what will be used for a total score. In the event of a tie, the next highest score of the tied competitors will be used to break the tie. This will continue until the tie is broken at which point the original score will be used to seed them in the next round.

13.  The amateur’s elimination process works by multiples of three and has no more than five rounds of competition. The number of competitors will dictate the number of eliminations. The first cut will be a little over half the division with the lowest half scores’ eliminated from the event. This is to save time since skim boarding is based around tides and conditions, which change rapidly, and since we compete in waves, this is crucial. Below is a template on how this will operate. Note that if the number of riders is under 20/30/40/or 50, that will be the elimination template used for that division.

Rnd. #1 20 riders/#2 9 riders/#3 6 riders/#4 3 riders Final 1.5 hours

#1 30         /#2 15         /#3 9          /#4 6          /#5 3 riders Final 2.6

#1 40         /#2 18         /#3 9          /#4 6          /#5 3          3.1 Hrs

#1 50         /#2 24         /#3 12        /#4 6          /#5 3          3.7 Hrs

14.  The pro elimination system is as follows: The process of three will be used but the first round will be used to seed the riders. There are three man heats in the first round. The winners move on to round three and the losers compete head to head with the winners advancing and the losers being put out. This will happen until the semi-finals where the losers will compete for 3rd and 4th. Yes this means man on man heats starting with round two. We also plan on running two contest zones with three judges each zone for the 1st three rounds for the VTD and larger pro events. This will save 84 minutes or more in the event and get the finals a lot closer to high tide or primary conditions.

15. The pro and amateurs will have 7-minute heats and 9-minute finals.

16.  If you miss your heat, you are eliminated. You may however enter the heat you are in during it’s running time and be scored.

17. We will be designating a contest zone, a buffer on the left & right sides as a “no man’s land”, and free skim zone/warm-up zone. See #19.

18.  Do not enter or skim in the contest zone. 1st infraction will have your highest score erased from all judging score cards. In the event that you are not in the contest you will be asked to leave. 2nd infraction if you are competing will be the same.

19. Snaking or cutting off other competitors will not be tolerated. The head judge will make the final determination on whether or not this rule has been broken resulting in losing your highest score on the judge’s cards. Snaking will be defined as any action that cuts off, blocks, or steals a wave from another skimmer that has already started to run at a wave. Calling a wave or movements to feint other riders will also result in losing your highest score on the judge’s cards.

20.  Do not approach or argue with the judges. Any issue will be brought to the attention of the contest directors. This is so that the contest will run smoothly. Any infraction of this rule can result in anything from loss of points to expulsion from the contest.

21.  Please keep the area of the beach you are at clean. We will provide trash bags to everyone to accomplish this. Failure to do so may result in not being asked to return next year.

And by all means, if you see anyway we can improve this event or have any suggestions or complaints, please contact us personally, via email on the site, or call us. This event is for the skimmers and to progress the sport.
